  1. What year(s) were you in 4-H?
I think I joined in 1979, but I am fairly certain I was in third grade. Our club was the Knottsville Excelsiors. We paid 25 cents at each business meeting for dues.

How old were you when you started and finished 4-H? I think I was 9 when I started and I was probably 14 when I finished. Our club just sort of disappeared. I think the mom that ran it gave up as her kids got older.

What did(does) 4-H mean to you?
When I was a kid in 4-H it meant getting together with friends to act grown up in business meetings. It meant getting to go to camp for a week in the summer. It was also part of our county fair, and so it meant a week at the fair showing exhibits, riding rides, and eating fabulous junk food.
As a leader now, 4-H means a lot of the same--fun with my friends, going fun places, and being a part of my community.

    What was(is) your focus?
We didn't have a focus when I was a kid. I took projects in lambs, conservation, and cooking. I still have some of the recipes I used from a 4-H book.
I like the focus of my club now- Community Service.

What impact has 4-H had on your life?
4-H has given me a way to be active in my community, as well as be an important part of my children's lives. I imagine when my boys are grown, it will be 4-H that we will recall the most.

Tell one of your favorite 4-H memories/stories.
I absolutely, positively loved camp. I was in the Seneca Tribe, and I can still sing the Seneca Tribal Song. Playing together all day, taking classes, raising and lowering the flag each day, buying orange creamsicles at the camp store, taps played by a very cute bugler, and then the nightly campfire. It was a different time, and I loved it.

  2. What year(s) were you in 4-H?

Ummm...let me think back...waaay back. I was probably sixth and seventh grade, which would have made me 12 and 13, which would have been 1971 and 1972. I think.

How old were you when you started and finished 4-H?

12, then left for a couple of years when my father made us choose between 4-H and other things and church. Then back during high school. So probably about 16 or 17 at the end.

What did(does) 4-H mean to you?

It was fun :-). My mom was the leader. I learned a lot.

    What was(is) your focus?

    Mostly sewing, cooking and crafts.

What impact has 4-H had on your life?

It has made me know that there are lots of crafts and ways to do things. My mom was a long-time member of Extension, which is sort of like grownup 4-H in New Hampshire, at least.

Tell one of your favorite 4-H memories/stories.

Out of time; I'll come back, hopefully.

  3. 1. My brother and I were in 4H in 1985 and 1986.

    2. We were in 2nd- 3rd grade (me) and 4th-5th grade (him).

    3. Now, 4H means community, connection, education, personal and group achievement.

    4. Outdoor survival and education.

    5. Once my kids got involved in 4H - it became more than a group to me and them. 4H showed them acceptance, shared community service, and made a way for them to experience things otherwise not possible.

    6. As a kid- my favorite would be my brother being at camp for a week, and me having my parents all to myself. As an adult- our trip to DC will forever be engraved in my mind as my favorite 4H experience and memory.

  4. * What year(s) were you in 4-H?- 1983-1984

    * How old were you when you started and finished 4-H?- 11

    * What did(does) 4-H mean to you? 4-H was the first "extra curricular" activity I was ever involved in. It showed me that there was life outside of school.

    * What was(is) your focus? Oddly enough, cooking!

    * What impact has 4-H had on your life? I learned how to make basic meals and I learned that presentation is everything!

    * Tell one of your favorite 4-H memories/stories. I won 2nd place for a recipe that I created called "cheeseburger casserole". I would have won first but my dish was "lacking in color", LOL! I had never won anything before, so this was a big moment.

  5. I was in from 1972 to 1978 or so in Illinois where I grew up.

I started when I was about 8 and finished when I was about 13.

4H - learning about farming, community and service.

I did all kinds of things - cooking, crocheting, cattle, bird watching, photography. We did club activities as well - Fall Fun Fest with skits and being an MC.

Learned to give presentations in front of groups. Teamwork and working independently on projects.

Going to Fall Fun Fest, participating and seeing what the other clubs presented.

  6. What year(s) were you in 4-H?

    I started in 2006 and I'm still in 4-H!

How old were you when you started and finished 4-H?

I started when I was six years old, I'm still in it and I'm now 9 years old.

What did(does) 4-H mean to you?

It means helping my community with service projects, and having tons of fun. It also means learning new things, meeting new friends, going to camp and learning a ton of stuff about animals!

    What was(is) your focus?

I haven't really focused on one thing. I have done all kinds of 4-H things. I started with showing a hog when I was a cloverbud at the livestock show. Then the next year I showed a lamb, and since then I have also showed a chicken and a rabbit. I also did a presentation on groundhogs and this year I am doing one on Baseball. I have done projects books on tons of different topics (on the election, holidays, wildlife, Healthy Bodies and even one on Chocolate)! I went to a biotechnology-forensics workshop and a fishing workshop. We do alot of community service projects in our club such as delivering food for meals on wheels, making things and taking it to the nursing home, and visiting with the people at the nursing home and taking food to our local food pantry.

What impact has 4-H had on your life?

I feel like I'm alot more outgoing and have learned a tremendous amount of stuff.

Tell one of your favorite 4-H memories/stories.

This past year was my last year being a cloverbud and I just love doing project books. I would one and then turn it in to my 4-H agent. I did not keep up with how many I did all year but I knew I did alot of them. Then on our 4-H achievement night when they called my name, I was shocked when I found out that I actually did 13 project books this year. My agent told me that I should teach others how to make them. It made me feel really good about my work and it was pretty exciting to get recognized with all those ribbons!

What was(is) your focus? I really don't remember because we are talking about more than 50 years ago.

What impact has 4-H had on your life? It was probably the beginning of my love of cooking/baking.

Tell one of your favorite 4-H memories/stories.
There is not any one thing that stands out, other than the brownies (I still have the receipe)and that was because I had never had brownies before.

  10. What year(s) were you in 4-H? Officially, 1974, but my first trip to 4-H summer camp was when I was 6 weeks old, in 1964. My Dad was the County Extension Agent and my Mom was a volunteer! I went to camp nearly every summer of my life!

How old were you when you started and finished 4-H? Officially, 10 (5th grade was the earliest you could start back then.) through 18 (graduated from high school.)

What did(does) 4-H mean to you? Confidence, organizational skills, leadership skills, lots of fun and friends, memories that will last a lifetime

What was(is) your focus? Early years: entomology; later years, bicycle safety & leadership

What impact has 4-H had on your life? I think much of my confidence comes from my experiences. I was elected as a District Officer my senior year (after running for election for 3 years!). That year, I was one of 10 student leaders in charge of planning and putting on all the District events. I got lots of planning, organizing and public speaking experience.

Tell one of your favorite 4-H memories/stories. The camps were always memorable. I was in Georgia, and our main camp was Rock Eagle, which had significant ties to Native American history, so our camp was organized into tribes. I remember the games and contests between the tribes, then the last night we had an outdoor "pagent" complete with fire flying through the air to light the bonfire. (It was years before I saw the cable that the fire came down on!)
We also had weekend retreats throughout the year at Rock Eagle and a few other places. One weekend, in February, we got "snowed in" and had to stay an extra night. That's really unusual in Georgia and was HUGE fun for us!

    # What impact has 4-H had on your life?
    (Didn't have an answer)

    # Tell one of your favorite 4-H memories/stories.

I learned about a different tool that I had never heard of. It helps dig up dandelions by the root. And every single one of the kids was trying to figure it out and no one knew. One of the kids thought it was a BBQ fork. Another kid was trying to find the name on it and found the name China and said it was called China!
